How to create contemporary style

If you’re a fan of sleek, modern interiors, clean lines and spacious, light-filled rooms, check out our guide to getting the contemporary look in your home.

Dress the window

Whether for a living room, kitchen, bathroom or bedroom, the lines of your window treatment need to be crisp to work in a contemporary room scheme. Choose slatted shutters, which will work throughout your home to create a consistent modern look. The effect you’re looking for is fuss free, so choose a wide slat – super size with our 114mm slat or try the 89mm option, which will also create the look beautifully.

When it comes to the material, basswood, poplar and premium elm shutters will all work well. A bright white finish has the aesthetic you’re after, but consider contemporary neutrals, such as tones of grey, too.

For maximum contemporary cred, check out the Designer range as well. You could create contrast with walls painted in architectural white by going for the Jet black paint finish or try one of the range of neutral shades, which are all perfect for modern room schemes.

Pick the furniture

Just as with the windows, seek out clean lines in your furniture designs to get a contemporary vibe. For upholstered furniture, go for fixed rather than loose covers and avoid feather-filled, sink-into seat cushions. Prefer long and low shapes for seating, occasional tables and beds, and choose dining tables and chairs featuring straight lines not curves.

Make sure you plan plenty of storage into your room schemes so that you can keep rooms airy and tidy with ease. Include plenty of hideaway options – drawers and cupboards without handles will continue the sleek effect – and be sparing in what you show off on open storage.

You can go for wood as well as manmade materials, but make sure any timber finish you choose is knot-free and smooth rather than rustic. In the kitchen and bathroom, high-gloss finishes for cabinetry are a sound choice.

Get the colour scheme right

You can follow the lead of your shutters when it comes to colour scheming. White is a top choice for modern rooms; the contrast of black and white is striking if you’re after a little more drama; and shades of grey are bang on trend.

Love a bright accent shade? Don’t be afraid to introduce a block of colour, which will pop against the whites you’ve used elsewhere in the room. Try it for a feature wall behind a freestanding bath, by a dining table in a kitchen-diner, or choose boldly coloured shutters for your window. Deep dramatic blues, bright orange or vibrant red look contemporary, and we can create exactly the shade you want with our Custom Colour Match Service.

Add the finishing touches

You’ll want to keep accessories to a minimum for true contemporary style, but that doesn’t mean going without. Think statement pieces – a sculptural light, a single vase or a plant with architectural foliage, for example. You can create wall displays with prints in plain frames (black looks good) and show off a small pile of books or magazines horizontally on shelving.

Going modern doesn’t mean going without comfort, so add cushions to the sofa without cluttering it. Dress your bed with throws (perfectly folded and aligned, of course), and use rugs underfoot, opting for plain designs.
