Measuring Recessed Windows

This guide is for standard recessed windows. It covers the 'in-recess' and 'front-of-recess' fitting method for our classic shutters.

What you’ll need

  • Steel tape measure
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper

Preparation

Decide where on the window your DIY shutters will be fitted. This is where you will take your measurements. Ensure you have enough clearance from any protruding window furniture like handles or vents. We recommend leaving at least 10mm gap between these and the back of the shutter frame.

In-Recess

Choose this fitting option if you plan to fit your shutter in the middle or towards the back of the window recess.

Front of Recess

Choose this fitting option if you plan to fit your shutter right at the front edge of the window recess. The front of recess frame includes a lip that will wrap around onto the surrounding walls, so you don't need to worry about concealing any gaps.

Step 3 - Make deductions

We recommend deducting 4mm for tolerance from your smallest width and height sizes.
