The table is an important investment when styling your kitchen or dining room. After all, you’ll be sitting around this table for many years to come so you want to make sure you’re still going to love it 10/20/30 years down the line – and also you want to make sure it’s going to be man enough for the job!
Really, you’re looking for 4 things to be sure that you’re making a wise investment:
1. It looks great in your home
Your new table needs to suit the character of the space it’s in. Ask yourself whether you’re looking for a timeless classic, something more traditional and rustic, or perhaps something fairly modern and contemporary. The answer to this will dictate the shape, style and colour of the table frame, as well as the type of wooden table top you choose. (There are some ideas for different styles below.)
2. It’s built to last
Too many wooden tables are built with weak corner brackets. We’d always recommend opting for table frames that have glued ‘mortice and tenon’ joints. This is sturdy and strong and you won’t need to worry about wobbly legs! Detailing like this means that your table can be passed on to generations to come.
3. It seats the right number of people
This seems an obvious one, but it’s worth considering. How often do you entertain guests? Do you have big family gatherings to think about? It might be an idea to get table extensions so that you can squeeze in a few extra guests from time to time.
4. It fits well in the space both in terms of size and shape
When measuring out your space, keep in mind that you should allow for 1m of breathing room around the edge of the table for chairs/benches. As a general rule, a round table works better in a smaller, square space, whereas a rectangular or square table will easily work in a large, spacious room.

Using several different colours together and mixing styles works really well in a cottage or barn conversion for a bit of added rustic charm. Whether it's a round or rectangular table, the traditional Turned Leg Frames go a long way in creating the rustic look, and they never lose their charm. Adding colour also helps, especially if you choose earthy tones of blue and green or natural, stone-like colours.

The neutral colours and clean edges from a square leg frame and reclaimed pine top will create an elegant, timeless style. Reclaimed Wood is an unexpected choice for the table in a timeless kitchen, but it works brilliantly adding a little character.

Prime European Oak is an excellent choice for the contemporary kitchen. It has a very clean, smooth finish and the wood is free of knots, splits and blemishes. Using this table top in your contemporary kitchen will help to keep things looking smart and up-to-date. The square legs suit the contemporary style much more, and you can have quite a lot of fun choosing colours – a smart, neutral grey and a bright bold colour would work equally well.
