Cleaning plantation shutters is a breeze. It’s one of our favourite things about them. Well, one of the many things. Whether you have bay, sash, or casement window shutters, after these quick tips, you’ll have yours gleaming in no time.

1. Gentle dusting

Tools Needed: Microfiber cloth, feather duster, or dry paper towel

Remove loose dust and debris using a microfiber cloth, feather duster, or dry paper towel. Carefully work between the slats of the shutters to remove built-up dust, ensuring you cover every nook and cranny. Every few weeks will be just fine.

2. Vacuuming

Tools Needed: Vacuum with a soft brush attachment

Use the soft-bristle brush attachment on your vacuum to eliminate any remaining dust, especially from corners and between slats. This method is particularly effective for larger shutters or those with intricate designs.

3. Spot cleaning

Method: Damp cloth with mild soap or a gentle cleaning solution

For spot cleaning or removing dust buildup, lightly dampen a cloth with water and a little dish soap. Wipe each louver carefully and follow up with just water to rinse away any soap residue.

Remember to use a damp, not wet, cloth to avoid water damage. Be sure to avoid strong detergents and always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Once cleaned, run your shutters over with a dry cloth to remove access moisture.

4. Vinegar Solution

Solution: 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water for a gentle, natural cleaning solution. This mixture won't damage the shutter's finish and is effective in removing stuck-on dirt. Wipe the shutters with a barely damp cloth dipped in this solution, ensuring all dirt and grease are removed.

Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
