With the festive season nearly upon us we pay a visit to Steffi Woodhatch’s lovely renovated bungalow in Newquay, where her white plantation shutters have brought a decorative dash of California to the Cornish coast. Here she tell us why she’s dreaming of a White Shutter Christmas!
Hi Steffi! Before you tell us about your installing your shutters, can you give us a bit of background info about yourself and your home?
We bought a 2 bedroom bungalow in Newquay, Cornwall in 2016 just before we got married, which hadn’t been touched since it was built in 1960! We got stuck into it when we returned from our honeymoon, after full planning permission was granted. We took the roof off, raised it and extended a large kitchen diner onto the rear of the property.
It’s certainly an impressive transformation. Can you outline the highs and the lows?
Oh wow! What a question. Luckily, we’re out the other side now and it’s all completed with just a few bits to finish.
Lows - the endless hours. Working full time jobs and doing a LOT of the build ourselves. Thankfully, we didn’t live in the house at the same time as the reno but that meant long hours between homes. To be honest, we didn’t have any dramas. Everyone around us would keep saying it will be worth it when we were knee deep in dust...but they were right!
Highs - seeing it come together. The light at the end of a very long tunnel was finishing at 10pm Christmas Eve 2017 to host Christmas Day!
And of course the interior and decor is a firm fave!

How would you describe your taste in decoration?
I’d say modern/Scandi with twists of traditional.
What made you choose white café style shutters for the living room?
We loved the idea of shutters, we had lots of rooms with different needs and the cafe style shutters
work amazingly in a large apex living room window.
What’s your favourite room in the house?
Ohhh a tough one… I love the bathroom, but my favourite probably has to be the living room with its sea views. Especially in the winter with the log burner lit and storm watching on a windy but sunny day.
Steffi knows the drill. Cafe style shutters complement her A-frame living room window.
As it’s nearly Christmas, can you tell us a bit more about that last minute festive deadline?
Unlike a couple of years ago, a California Christmas will be enjoyed to full potential this year! Back then, it was very much panic stations in the lead up to hosting our first Christmas after what had been a very large and challenging renovation project.
Paint brushes and tools were finally put down at 10pm on Christmas Eve to enjoy a quick glass of champagne before bed, ready to host our family the very next day. Despite our exhaustion we were elated at seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and our dream finally coming to fruition.
We had temporary paper blinds up in the bedrooms which meant excitement grew daily for the delivery of our wooden shutters from California Shutters. When they arrived, we couldn't have been happier with the final look and feel of them. They frame the bedrooms beautifully and the A-Frame window in the Living Room particularly well.
I love looking out to sea for gorgeous sun sets or stormy sea watching and this can be done with the shutter's folded back or to view glimpses through the gorgeous wooden slats.
As well as Christmas trees, Steffi's house also features full height and tier on tier shutters!
How easy were the shutters to install? Did you come across any challenges during measuring/installation?
Fairly easy! My husband Lee is very handy but they were easy to install with the clear directions you provide.
What difference did the shutters make to your room/house?
Oh well! They just make it. Looking at the house from outside the windows are framed with shutters and they all match. I love it and love them.
What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about installing shutters but is unsure?
Do it! Get a carpenter to help measure if you’re unsure, though. I couldn’t find anyone else who could beat the price of California Shutters and the quality is amazing.
Finally, what would you say is your favourite thing about your shutters?
Hmm… I just love shutters and the styling that they bring to a room. They are in a league of their own so can’t be compared to curtains or blinds. I just love everything about them!
Thanks very much Steffi. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!
